Why do some crystals split along flat lines?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some crystals split along flat lines?

The Big Idea

Tap some crystals just right, and they split along perfectly flat lines! Why does that happen? Let's find out.

Weak Directions

Step one: Weak Directions. Inside a crystal, atoms are held together more weakly in some directions than in others. Those directions form flat weak planes.

Splitting

Step two: Splitting. When the crystal is tapped or hit, it can split along those weak flat planes. This is called cleavage.

Examples

Step three: Examples. Mica splits into thin, bendy sheets, and calcite breaks into slanted blocks. Gem cutters study cleavage so they can split big stones the safe, smart way.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Mica makes sheets. Calcite makes blocks. Salt makes cubes. Cutters use it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Salt breaks into little cubes because it has cube-shaped cleavage. Mica peels in sheets. Cutters study cleavage. Splits are flat.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Stack a deck of playing cards. Slide the top cards sideways. Notice how the layers slip. That's a bit like cleavage. Can you think of other layered things?

Outro

Some crystals split along flat lines because their atoms are held more weakly in certain directions. This is called cleavage, and it makes mica peel into sheets and salt break into cubes. Gem cutters use it! Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question. Keep looking, keep learning, and keep asking why!
