How do you pick the best idea to build first?

Video · 1:42 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 26

After a brainstorm, you will have many ideas, and you cannot build them all. Ask three questions of each one. Would it really fix the problem? Can I make a test version with things I have? Is it safe? Give each idea a score from 1 to 3 on each question and add them up. Build the idea with the top score. If it does not work, try the next one.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do you pick the best idea to build first?

The Big Idea

You brainstormed lots of ideas! But you can't build them all. How do you pick the best one first?

Three Questions

Step one: Three Questions. After a brainstorm, ask three questions of each idea. Would it really fix the problem, can I make a test version with things I have, and is it safe?

Scoring

Step two: Scoring. Give each idea a score from 1 to 3 on each question. Then add up the scores.

Build It

Step three: Build It. Build the idea with the top score. If it doesn't work, try the next one on your list.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Does it solve it? Can you make it? Is it safe? Add the points.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Many inventors build the simplest idea first, because they learn the most from it. Try the next idea. Safety always counts. Keep your list.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Write three ideas for fixing a messy backpack. Score each one using the three questions. Add up the points. Which one wins? Try building the winner!

Outro

To pick the best idea to build first, ask whether it fixes the problem, whether you can make a test version, and whether it's safe. Score each idea and build the top one. If it fails, try the next! Science is amazing! What will you discover next? Every question is a new adventure, so keep wondering and keep exploring with me!
