How does the Zamboni make hockey ice smooth?
Frank Zamboni, who ran an ice rink in California, invented the machine in 1949. It scrapes a thin layer off the top of the ice, collects the shavings, washes the surface, and then spreads a thin film of warm water that freezes into a fresh smooth sheet. Rinks need this because skates carve rough lines in the ice. Many skaters like watching it work.

Between hockey periods, a big machine glides over the ice. It's a Zamboni! It makes the ice smooth again.
The Inventor
Step one: The Inventor. Frank Zamboni, who ran an ice rink in California, invented the machine in 1949. Rinks need it because skates carve rough lines in the ice.
Scrape and Wash

Warm Water
Step three: Warm Water. It spreads a thin film of warm water that freezes into a fresh smooth sheet. Many skaters love watching it work.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! It scrapes ice. It collects shavings. It washes the surface. It spreads warm water.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The first Zamboni was built on a Jeep chassis. Skates carve lines. Warm water freezes smooth. Used between periods.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw the four jobs a Zamboni does. Show it scraping. Show it collecting shavings. Show it washing and flooding. Label each part.
Outro
