Book 26, Question 39 · Video
How did a gliding rainforest seed inspire an early airplane?
In the rainforests of Southeast Asia, a vine called Alsomitra grows seeds with big, thin, papery wings that glide gently in a steady line. Around 1907, Austrian engineer Igo Etrich studied the seeds and copied their curved, swept-back wings in his gliders. By 1910, they became the Etrich Taube, an early airplane that was easy to keep stable in the air. A tiny seed helped teach people how wings can balance.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How did a gliding rainforest seed inspire an early airplane?
The Big Idea
A seed that glides like a tiny airplane! It grows in the rainforest. It helped inspire an early airplane.
Alsomitra
Step one: Alsomitra. In the rainforests of Southeast Asia, a vine called Alsomitra grows seeds with big, thin, papery wings. They glide gently in a steady line.
Etrich
Step two: Etrich. Around 1907, Austrian engineer Igo Etrich studied the seeds. He copied their curved, swept-back wings in his gliders.
The Taube
Step three: The Taube. By 1910, they became the Etrich Taube, an early airplane that was easy to keep stable in the air. A tiny seed helped teach people how wings can balance.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The wing is papery. It curves gently. It sweeps back. It glides steadily.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Taube means dove in German. Grows in rainforests. Seeds taught balance. Wings can be paper thin.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, cut a seed-shaped glider from paper with wide, swept-back wings. Cut a plain paper rectangle too. Throw each gently, away from faces. Which flies steadier? Try changing the wing shape.
Outro
A gliding rainforest seed called Alsomitra inspired Igo Etrich's early airplane, the Taube. Its curved, swept-back wings helped people learn how wings can balance in the air. Science is amazing!
