What is biomimicry?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is biomimicry?

The Big Idea

Nature has been inventing for millions of years! Engineers copy its best ideas. This is called biomimicry.

Copying Nature

Step one: Copying Nature. Biomimicry means copying ideas from nature to solve human problems. People look to plants and animals for answers.

Tested Designs

Step two: Tested Designs. Plants and animals have been testing designs for millions of years. The ones that work well survive and get passed along.

Study and Use

Step three: Study and Use. Engineers study how a bird flies, how a gecko sticks, or how a leaf stays clean. Then they use those ideas in machines, buildings, and materials.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Birds teach flight. Geckos teach grip. Leaves teach cleaning. Shells teach strength.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The word comes from Greek words meaning life and imitate. Nature is full of clues. Sketch what you see. Engineers borrow ideas.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pick a plant or animal. List three clever things about its body. Think of a human tool that could copy one of them. Draw your tool. Give it a fun name.
