What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What helps a city stay cool during a heat wave?

The Big Idea

During a heat wave, cities can get very hot. How do they stay cool? Many tricks help!

Trees and Roofs

Step one: Trees and Roofs. Shade trees, parks, and light-colored roofs keep cities cooler. Dark pavement soaks up heat.

Cooling Places

Step two: Cooling Places. Cities open cooling centers in libraries and community centers. They set up water fountains and run splash pads.

People Help

Step three: People Help. People can drink water, rest in the shade, and check on neighbors. Warm nights are hard for people, so planning for heat helps everyone.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Stay hydrated. Rest in shade. Cool off with water. Help others.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Dark pavement can be much hotter than grass on a sunny day. Wear a hat in the sun. Libraries become cool spots. Check on neighbors.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, use a thermometer. Measure the ground in the shade. Measure the ground in the sun. Which is hotter? Do not touch hot pavement with bare hands.
