How does bright night light change the lives of birds and insects?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does bright night light change the lives of birds and insects?

The Big Idea

Cities glow brightly all night long. That light helps people, but it confuses many animals! Let's see how.

Lost Birds

Step one: Lost Birds. Many animals use natural light to tell day from night. Migrating birds steer by stars and the Moon, so bright buildings can lure them off course and make them circle until they are tired.

Busy Insects

Step two: Busy Insects. Insects swarm around lamps instead of feeding or finding mates. Many get too tired to keep going.

Fireflies

Step three: Fireflies. Fireflies cannot see each other's flashes in bright light. Turning off extra lights helps wildlife find its way again.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Birds lose their way. Moths circle lamps. Fireflies can't signal. Turtles head the wrong way.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Baby sea turtles on beaches can crawl toward city lights instead of the sea. Dark skies show more stars. Turn off extra lights. Many animals need the dark.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at the sky at night from your yard with a grown-up. Count how many stars you can see. Then turn off the outdoor lights. Wait a few minutes and count again. How many more stars appeared?

Outro

Bright night light confuses birds that steer by stars, distracts insects from feeding, and hides fireflies' flashes. Turning off extra lights helps wildlife find its way. Darkness matters too!
