What is a green roof, and how does it help?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is a green roof, and how does it help?

The Big Idea

Imagine a garden on top of a building! It is called a green roof. Let's see how it helps the city.

Layers

Step one: Layers. A green roof is a roof covered with plants. Under them are layers of soil, a drainage layer, a root barrier, and a waterproof sheet.

Soaking Rain

Step two: Soaking Rain. The plants soak up rain, so less water rushes into storm drains. They keep the building cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Wildlife Homes

Step three: Wildlife Homes. A green roof also gives bees, butterflies, and birds a place to live. It turns a bare roof into a living space.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Plants grow on top. Soil feeds them. Drainage moves water. Waterproofing protects.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Many green roofs are covered with hardy plants called sedums. Less water in drains. Bees visit rooftops. Warmer in winter.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Fill one tray with soil and plants. Fill another with gravel. Pour the same amount of water over each. Compare how much runs off. Which tray held more water?
