Why do city birds sing at a higher pitch?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do city birds sing at a higher pitch?

The Big Idea

Cities are noisy places. So how do birds hear each other sing? Some birds change their songs!

Drowned Out

Step one: Drowned Out. In noisy cities, low rumbles from traffic can drown out deep bird songs. Other birds may not hear them.

Higher Songs

Step two: Higher Songs. Scientists found that some birds, such as great tits and song sparrows, sing higher or louder in the city. That way, other birds can hear them.

New Times

Step three: New Times. Some birds even sing at different times of day. Birds adapt to the soundscape around them.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Some sing louder. Some sing higher. Some change times. Some sing at night.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some city birds sing at night under streetlights. Mornings are full of songs. Birds need to be heard. Parks are quieter.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Listen to the birds near your home in the morning. Describe their songs: high, low, short, or long? Notice the other sounds around them. Are the birds louder than the traffic? Write down what you hear.

Outro

City birds sing at a higher pitch because low traffic rumbles drown out deep songs. Some birds sing higher, louder, or at different times so other birds can hear them. Science is amazing!
