Book 25, Question 61 · Video
How does a cell tower pass your phone call along?
A cell phone is a small radio. When you make a call, it sends signals to the nearest cell tower, which has antennas that talk to many phones at once. The tower passes your call along through cables, often fiber, to the next place it needs to go. As you travel, your call hands off from tower to tower. Cities need many towers because each one covers only a small area.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a cell tower pass your phone call along?
The Big Idea
When you make a phone call, your voice zooms away. It travels through cell towers! Let's follow the call.
A Small Radio
Step one: A Small Radio. A cell phone is a small radio. When you make a call, it sends signals to the nearest cell tower.
Towers
Step two: Towers. The tower has antennas that talk to many phones at once. It passes your call along through cables, often fiber, to the next place it needs to go.
Hand Off
Step three: Hand Off. As you travel, your call hands off from tower to tower. Cities need many towers because each one covers only a small area.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Your phone sends signals. Antennas catch them. Fiber carries the call. It reaches the other phone.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Radio waves travel at the speed of light. Phone signals are weak, so towers must be close together. Some towers look like trees. Antennas sit on rooftops.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a city map with towers as dots. Draw a circle around each dot. Trace a car route across the map. Mark each place where the call would switch towers. How many switches did you find?
Outro
A cell tower passes your call along by catching your phone's radio signals and sending them through cables, often fiber. As you move, your call hands off from tower to tower. Science is amazing!
