Book 25, Question 29 · Video
How do road builders make a road layer by layer?
A road starts with leveled, packed soil. On top go layers of crushed stone that spread out the weight of traffic and let water drain away. Finally, workers lay hot asphalt or pour concrete on the top. The road is slightly higher in the middle, so rain runs off to the sides. Big machines like graders, pavers, and rollers do the work.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do road builders make a road layer by layer?
The Big Idea
A road looks flat and simple. But underneath, it has many layers! Let's build one from the bottom up.
Packed Soil
Step one: Packed Soil. A road starts with leveled, packed soil. Big rollers press it firm.
Crushed Stone
Step two: Crushed Stone. On top go layers of crushed stone. They spread out the weight of traffic and let water drain away.
Top Layer
Step three: Top Layer. Finally, workers lay hot asphalt or pour concrete on top. The road is slightly higher in the middle, so rain runs off to the sides.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Graders level the soil. Trucks bring stone. Pavers spread asphalt. Rollers press it flat.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A road is built from the bottom up, like a layer cake. Roads slope to the sides. Hot asphalt is only for trained workers to handle. Stay away from road crews.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make a road model in a pan. Add a layer of soil, then small stones, then damp sand on top. Make the middle a little higher. Pour water on it. Where does the water flow?
Outro
Roads are built in layers: packed soil at the bottom, crushed stone that spreads weight and drains water, and hot asphalt or concrete on top, slightly higher in the middle. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises. Keep asking big questions, and keep exploring with me! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books.
