The Big Idea

Lots of people work with the ground for a living! Some study it, some dig it, and some build on it. Let's meet them.

Scientists

Step one: Scientists. Geologists study rocks, and hydrogeologists study groundwater. Soil scientists look at the ground and plants.

Diggers

Step two: Diggers. Tunnel engineers and miners dig. Archaeologists uncover the past, and well drillers bring up water.

Builders

Step three: Builders. Civil engineers plan foundations, and utility workers care for pipes and cables. Each job needs science, math, careful measuring, and good teamwork, and many of them let you spend time outdoors.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Geologists study rocks. Archaeologists uncover the past. Tunnel engineers dig tunnels. Well drillers find water.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some scientists work in labs. Others work outdoors in the field. These jobs need good teamwork. Math helps with careful measuring.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pick one of these ground jobs. Write three questions you would ask a person who does it. Ask a grown-up to help you find answers. Which job sounds most fun? Draw yourself doing it.

Outro

Many people work with the ground, like geologists, hydrogeologists, soil scientists, miners, archaeologists, well drillers, civil engineers, and utility workers. Each job uses science, math, and teamwork. Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question. Keep looking, keep learning, and keep asking why!
