What else do we make from oil besides fuel?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What else do we make from oil besides fuel?

The Big Idea

Oil is used to make fuel for cars and planes. But that is not all! Oil helps make many everyday things.

Separating Oil

Step one: Separating Oil. Oil is a mixture, and it can be separated into different parts. Some become gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.

Everyday Things

Step two: Everyday Things. Other parts are used to make plastics, asphalt for roads, wax, lubricants, and many fabrics. Even some medicines and cosmetics start from oil products.

Use It Wisely

Step three: Use It Wisely. Because oil is so useful, it is important not to waste it. Recycling plastic and using less helps make oil last longer.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Fuel powers cars. Plastic makes bottles. Asphalt paves roads. Wax makes candles.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Asphalt for roads is a thick part of oil. Some fabrics, like polyester, come from oil. Many crayons are made with wax from oil. Recycling plastic helps save oil.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look around your home for five things made from plastic. Write them down. Think about what could replace each one. Could you reuse any of them? Share your ideas with a grown-up.
