How do veins of metal form in rock?

Video · 1:50 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 24

Deep in Earth, hot water full of dissolved minerals moves through cracks in rock. As the water cools, the minerals come out of the water and build up on the walls of the crack, like the crust inside a kettle. Over thousands of years, the crack fills with minerals, which sometimes include gold, silver, or copper. That is called a vein.

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do veins of metal form in rock?

The Big Idea

Some rocks have shiny stripes running through them. Sometimes those stripes hold gold or silver! They are called veins.

Hot Water

Step one: Hot Water. Deep in Earth, hot water full of dissolved minerals moves through cracks in rock. It carries the minerals along.

Cooling

Step two: Cooling. As the water cools, minerals come out of the water and build up on the walls of the crack. It is like the crust inside an old kettle.

A Vein

Step three: A Vein. Over thousands of years, the crack fills with minerals, which sometimes include gold, silver, or copper. That filled crack is called a vein.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A crack opens in rock. Hot water flows through. The water cools. Minerals fill the crack.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! White quartz veins are often seen cutting through dark rocks. Gold is sometimes found in quartz veins. Veins take thousands of years to form. Look for light stripes in dark rocks on your next walk.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a crack in a dark rock. Fill it with shiny stripes of mineral. Label it a vein. Add arrows for the hot water that made it. Color your vein gold, silver, or white.

Outro

Veins of metal form when hot, mineral-rich water flows through cracks deep in rock. As it cools, minerals like quartz, gold, or copper build up and slowly fill the crack. Science is amazing!
