How do roots find water in the soil?

Video · 1:53 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 24

Roots can sense moisture. In drier soil, the tips bend toward the wetter side, which is called hydrotropism. They also grow more where there are nutrients and slow down in poor spots. Because roots spread out in many directions, they can discover pockets of water.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do roots find water in the soil?

The Big Idea

Roots cannot see, but they still find water! They feel which way the soil is wetter. Then they grow toward it.

Sensing Wet

Step one: Sensing Wet. Roots can sense moisture. In drier soil, root tips bend toward the wetter side, which is called hydrotropism.

Smart Growing

Step two: Smart Growing. Roots grow more where there are nutrients. They slow down in poor spots.

Spreading Out

Step three: Spreading Out. Because roots spread out in many directions, they can discover pockets of water. A thirsty plant sends out extra branches to reach the damp zone.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Dry soil is on one side. The root tip senses it. The root bends. It grows toward wet soil.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Roots can grow toward a leaky pipe, which is why they sometimes cause plumbing trouble. Some trees in dry places grow very deep roots to reach water. Roots often grow quickly after a good rain. Most water enters near the tips of the roots.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a root in the soil. Color one side as wet soil and the other as dry soil. Draw the root growing toward the wet patch. Add arrows to show where it bends. Explain your drawing to a grown-up.

Outro

Roots find water by sensing moisture and bending toward wetter soil, which is called hydrotropism. They spread out in many directions and send extra branches toward damp spots. Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question. Keep looking, keep learning, and keep asking why! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books.
