What are grubs, and what do they become?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What are grubs, and what do they become?

The Big Idea

Dig in a garden and you might find a fat, curled, white grub. It looks like a worm, but it is not! It is a baby beetle.

What a Grub Is

Step one: What a Grub Is. A grub is a young beetle that looks like a fat, curved, creamy white worm. It has a brown head and six small legs.

Underground Meals

Step two: Underground Meals. Grubs live in the soil and munch on roots and decaying plants. They grow for months, or even years.

Big Change

Step three: Big Change. A grub forms a case and changes into an adult beetle, such as a June bug. Then it digs out and flies away.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! It starts as an egg. It hatches into a grub. The grub becomes a pupa. The pupa becomes an adult beetle.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! In some beetles, the grub stage lasts for years. Some adult beetles live only a few weeks. Birds and skunks love to dig up grubs to eat. June bugs often fly toward porch lights in early summer.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw the life cycle of a beetle. Start with an egg. Then draw a grub and a pupa. Finish with an adult beetle. Add arrows to show the order.

Outro

A grub is a young beetle that lives in the soil, eating roots and rotting plants. After months or years, it changes into an adult beetle, like a June bug, and flies away. Science is amazing!
