What is inside an ant nest?
An ant nest is a maze of tunnels and rooms underground. There are chambers for the queen, for eggs and larvae, for storing food, and even for waste. Workers carry soil grains up through the tunnels, which makes the mound at the entrance. Some nests go several feet deep and house thousands of ants who share the work.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is inside an ant nest?
The Big Idea
Under an ant hill is a hidden city. It has tunnels, rooms, and lots of busy workers. Let's peek inside!
Tunnels
Step one: Tunnels. An ant nest is a maze of tunnels and rooms underground. Some nests go several feet deep.
Rooms
Step two: Rooms. There are chambers for the queen, for eggs and larvae, and for storing food. There are even rooms for waste!
The Mound
Step three: The Mound. Workers carry soil grains up through the tunnels. That makes the mound at the entrance. Thousands of ants share the work.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The queen has her own room. Eggs and larvae stay in the nursery. Food is kept in the pantry. Waste goes in its own room.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Ants dig by carrying out one grain of soil at a time. An ant can carry many times its own body weight. Ants move their eggs to warmer or cooler rooms as needed. Ants follow scent trails to find their way.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a cross section of an ant nest, like a side view. Add twisty tunnels. Add at least four different rooms. Label what each room is for. Where would you put the queen?
