How can a jar of muddy water show the layers in soil?

Video · 1:55 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 24

Put some soil in a jar of water, shake it, and let it settle. Sand sinks first because it is heavy, forming a layer on the bottom within a minute. Silt settles above it over several hours, and the tiniest clay particles take a day or more. You can see the three layers of soil particles.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a jar of muddy water show the layers in soil?

The Big Idea

A jar of muddy water can be a soil detective tool. Shake it, wait, and watch. The soil sorts itself into layers!

Shake It

Step one: Shake It. Put some soil in a jar of water, close the lid tightly, and shake it. Then set it down and let it settle.

Sand First

Step two: Sand First. Sand sinks first, because its grains are heavy. It forms a layer on the bottom within about a minute.

Silt and Clay

Step three: Silt and Clay. Silt settles above the sand over several hours. The tiniest clay particles take a day or more. Then you can see three layers.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Sand sits on the bottom. Silt sits in the middle. Clay settles on top. The water slowly clears.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Soil scientists use this kind of settling test to describe soil. A thick sand layer means your soil is sandy. Bits of leaves and twigs often float on top. Rivers drop heavy sand first and carry tiny clay farther.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, fill a jar about one third with soil, then add water. Close the lid tightly and shake. Mark the layers with tape after one minute, one hour, and one day. Which layer is thickest? Is your soil sandy or clayey?

Outro

A jar of muddy water shows soil layers because the grains settle at different speeds. Heavy sand sinks first, silt follows, and tiny clay settles last. Science is amazing!
