Book 24, Question 17 · Video

Why is there always leftover dirt when you fill a hole back in?

Video · 1:50 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 24

Soil in the ground is packed tightly. When you dig it up, the dirt becomes fluffy and takes up more space because it has more air in it. Then, when you put it back, it does not squash down into the same space. Also, the objects you took out, like rocks or roots, take up room.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is there always leftover dirt when you fill a hole back in?

The Big Idea

You dig a hole, then fill it back in. But there is dirt left over! Where did the extra come from?

Packed Tight

Step one: Packed Tight. Soil in the ground is packed tightly. Years of rain and weight have pressed it down.

Fluffy Dirt

Step two: Fluffy Dirt. When you dig soil up, it becomes fluffy and takes up more space, because it has more air in it. When you put it back, it does not squash down into the same space.

Extra Things

Step three: Extra Things. Also, the things you dug out, like rocks or roots, take up room in the pile. So you end up with a mound on top.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Packed soil is tight. Digging loosens it. Air gaps make it fluffy. The extra makes a mound.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Soil settles down over time as rain and weight press it. Builders use heavy rollers to pack soil down tight. Loose soil puffs up, a bit like popcorn takes more room than its kernels. After a few months, a mound over a filled hole usually sinks down.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Fill a cup with soil and press it down firmly. Tip it out onto a tray. Try to put it back without pressing. Is there soil left over? What changed, and why?

Outro

There is leftover dirt because digging fluffs up packed soil with extra air, so it takes up more space. Over time, rain and weight press it back down. Science is amazing!
