Book 24, Question 11 · Video

How can solid-looking ground hold both air and water?

Video · 1:57 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 24

Soil looks solid, but it is full of tiny gaps called pores between its grains, a bit like a sponge. About half of the space in good soil is air and water. These spaces let roots breathe, let rainwater soak in, and give tiny animals room to move. If soil gets squashed, the gaps close up, and plants have a hard time growing.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can solid-looking ground hold both air and water?

The Big Idea

Soil looks solid, but it is full of tiny gaps. Those gaps are called pores. They hold both air and water, like a sponge!

Tiny Gaps

Step one: Tiny Gaps. Soil is full of tiny gaps called pores between its grains. It is a bit like a sponge.

Half and Half

Step two: Half and Half. About half of the space in good soil is air and water. The other half is grains of rock and bits of rotted plants.

Room to Live

Step three: Room to Live. These spaces let roots breathe, let rainwater soak in, and give tiny animals room to move. If soil gets squashed, the gaps close up, and plants have a hard time growing.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Grains make up the solid part. Air fills some gaps. Water fills other gaps. Roots grow through the spaces.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Walking on the same patch of soil again and again can pack it down. Worm tunnels make new spaces for air and water. After rain, water fills many of the gaps. Good soil has crumbs with spaces between them, a bit like cookie crumbs.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Fill a cup with dry sand. Slowly pour in some water. Watch the bubbles rise to the top. The bubbles are air leaving the gaps as water fills them. How much water fit in the sand?

Outro

Solid-looking ground holds air and water in tiny gaps called pores. About half of good soil is space, giving roots, rainwater, and tiny animals room to move. Science is amazing!
