Book 24, Question 4 · Video
What is bedrock?
Bedrock is the solid rock that lies beneath all the soil and loose stones. It may be only a few inches below the surface, or hundreds of feet down. Soil forms slowly as wind, water, ice, and roots break the top of the rock into smaller pieces. In some places, like along cliffs and mountains, you can see the bedrock itself.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is bedrock?
The Big Idea
Under all the soil and loose stones is solid rock. It is called bedrock. It is like the floor under the ground!
Under Everything
Step one: Under Everything. Bedrock is the solid rock that lies beneath all the soil and loose stones. It may be only a few inches below the surface, or hundreds of feet down.
Making Soil
Step two: Making Soil. Soil forms slowly as wind, water, ice, and roots break the top of the bedrock into smaller pieces. Over a very long time, those pieces become part of the soil.
Seeing Bedrock
Step three: Seeing Bedrock. In some places, like along cliffs and mountains, you can see the bedrock itself. Roads cut through hills can show it too.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Wind wears rock down. Water seeps into cracks. Ice pushes cracks wider. Roots split rock apart.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Much of northern Canada sits on very old bedrock called the Canadian Shield. Many tall buildings rest their foundations on bedrock. Cracks in bedrock can hold water, and some wells reach it. Turning bedrock into soil takes a very long time.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find a place where bare bedrock shows, like a rocky outcrop. Stay away from cliff edges and loose rocks. Draw the rock. Look for cracks and mark them on your drawing. What do you think made the cracks?
Outro
Bedrock is the solid rock under all the soil and loose stones. Wind, water, ice, and roots slowly break its top into the pieces that become soil. Science is amazing!
