What Do the Tail and String of a Kite Do?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What do the tail and string of a kite do?

The Big Idea

A kite has a tail and a string. They look simple, but they matter. What jobs do they do?

The Tail

Step one: the tail. A kite tail adds a little drag at the back. That drag keeps the kite pointed up into the wind and stops it from spinning.

The Bridle

Step two: the bridle. A bridle is a pair of strings attached to the kite. It sets the angle of the kite to the wind.

The Flying Line

Step three: the flying line. The line holds the kite so the wind keeps pushing up on it. Without the line, the kite would blow away.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The tail adds drag at the back. The bridle sets the angle. The line holds the kite. The wind keeps pushing up.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A longer tail adds more drag and steadiness. Too long a tail can make the kite heavy and hard to lift. Some kites need no tail because their shape stays steady. A bridle sets the kite angle to the wind.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, fly a kite in a big open field on a gentle wind day. Try a short tail, then a longer tail. Watch which one stays steadier. Stay far from roads, trees, and power lines. Write what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.

Outro

A kite tail adds drag to keep the kite steady, while the bridle and line set its angle so the wind can lift it. Science is amazing! What will you discover next? Every question is a new adventure, so keep wondering and keep exploring with me! Ask a grown-up to help you fly outdoors safely.
