Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do pilots find their way across an ocean?
The Big Idea
Over an ocean there are no signs. Pilots cannot see any roads. So how do they find their way?
Satellites
Step one: satellites. Today pilots use GPS, which gets signals from satellites. Computers also track the plane's speed and direction.
Backups
Step two: backups. Pilots also have maps, radio beacons, and backups. In the past, navigators used the stars and compasses.
Planned Tracks
Step three: planned tracks. Over the ocean, planes follow planned tracks. They report their positions by radio or satellite, so controllers always know where they are.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Satellites send signals. Computers track the plane. Maps are a backup. Reports go to controllers.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some planes also use a spinning gyroscope system to know how they have moved. Navigators once used the stars. GPS signals come from satellites. Planes follow planned tracks.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Use a map and a ruler to plot a route between two cities. Measure how far it is. Use the map scale to change it into miles. Ask a grown-up to check. Then explain what you learned to a friend.
Outro
Over the ocean, pilots find their way with GPS, computers, maps, and planned tracks, and they report their position to controllers. Science is amazing! What will you discover next? Every question is a new adventure, so keep wondering and keep exploring with me! Ask a grown-up to help you try the mission, and see what you can find out.
