Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is the difference between lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air flight?
The Big Idea
Some things fly because they are lighter than air. Others are heavier but still fly. Two big ideas in flight!
Lighter Than Air
Step one: lighter than air. Balloons and blimps float because they are filled with something lighter than air, such as hot air or helium. This is called lighter-than-air flight.
Heavier Than Air
Step two: heavier than air. Airplanes, helicopters, and birds are heavier than air. They must make lift with moving wings or rotors.
Both Work
Step three: both work. Each way works well for different jobs. Both follow the rules of physics.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Balloons float on air. Planes make lift. Helicopters spin wings. Both follow physics.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some modern designs mix both ideas in a hybrid airship. Blimps float with helium inside. Birds are heavier than air. Both follow the rules of physics.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Sort a list of flying things into two groups. Make one group lighter than air. Make one group heavier than air. Compare with a friend. Keep asking why, and keep exploring!
Outro
Balloons and blimps are lighter than air, while planes, helicopters, and birds are heavier and make lift with wings or rotors. Which kind of flight would you most like to try someday? Science is amazing! What will you discover next? There is always more to discover, and you are a great science explorer! Ask a grown-up to help you try the mission, and see what you can find out.
