How Can a Plane Land Safely in Thick Fog?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a plane land safely in thick fog?

The Big Idea

Fog can hide the runway completely. Can a plane still land? Yes, with special instruments!

Instruments Guide

Step one: instruments guide. When pilots cannot see the runway, they use instruments to guide them. An instrument landing system sends radio beams.

Too High or Low

Step two: too high or low. The beams tell the plane if it is too high, too low, or to the left or right of the runway. Some can even land the plane automatically.

Extra Care

Step three: extra care. Airports with fog often have extra lights and strict checks. Pilots train a lot for this.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Fog hides the runway. Radio beams guide the plane. Lights help at the end. Pilots follow the plan.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Pilots have special rules about how low they can go without seeing the runway. Some planes can land automatically. Airports with fog have extra lights. Pilots train a lot for this.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Walk with your eyes closed while a friend guides you with their voice. Choose a safe, clear room. See how clear directions help. Swap places and guide your friend. Then explain what you learned to a friend.

Outro

Pilots land in thick fog using radio beams and instruments, plus extra lights and a lot of training. Science is amazing! What will you discover next?
