Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a jet engine work?
The Big Idea
A jet engine follows four simple steps. Suck, squeeze, bang, blow! Let's go through them one by one.
Suck and Squeeze
Step one: suck and squeeze. A big fan sucks in air. Compressor blades squeeze the air tightly.
Bang
Step two: bang. Fuel is sprayed in and burns. That makes very hot gas expand fast.
Blow
Step three: blow. The gas blasts out the back, spinning a turbine on the way, and the plane is pushed forward. The turbine also runs the fan and compressor.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The fan sucks in air. The compressor squeezes it. Fuel burns in the burner. The turbine spins and the gas blows out.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Parts of a jet engine run hotter than the melting point of their metal, so cool air flows over them. The turbine also runs the fan and compressor. Hot gas blasts out the back. That pushes the plane forward.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Say suck, squeeze, bang, blow. Act out each step with your hands. Teach it to a friend. See if they can say it back. Share your results with someone you love.
Outro
A jet engine sucks in air, squeezes it, burns fuel, and blows hot gas out the back to make thrust. Science is amazing! Stay curious! The more you look around, the more wonders you will find, so keep your eyes open! Keep your eyes open, because science is hiding in the things you see every day.
