Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can't people fly by flapping wings tied to their arms?

The Big Idea

Why can't people flap wings tied to their arms and fly? Birds do it all the time. The answer is in the muscles!

Small Chest Muscles

Step one: small chest muscles. Our chest muscles are too small for our weight. A bird has huge flight muscles that make up about a quarter of its body weight.

Light Skeletons

Step two: light skeletons. Birds also have a light skeleton. A person would need enormous muscles and a giant chest to flap wings big enough.

Machines

Step three: machines. So people invented airplanes, gliders, and other machines to fly instead. Our brains turned out to be our best wings.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A bird has huge flight muscles. A person has smaller ones. A bird has a light skeleton. People built airplanes.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Pedal-powered aircraft have crossed the English Channel, but they need huge, light wings. Birds have huge flight muscles. People do not. Our brains turned out to be our best wings.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Try flapping your arms for one minute. Count your flaps. How tired do they get? Think about how birds do it for hours. Write down what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.

Outro

People cannot fly by flapping arm wings because our muscles are too small, so we invented airplanes and gliders instead. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions! There is always more to discover, and you are a great science explorer! Thank you for exploring with me, and remember that every great scientist started with a question.
