Can Snakes and Frogs Glide Through the Air?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Can snakes and frogs glide through the air?

The Big Idea

Snakes and frogs can glide through the air! It sounds like a tall tale. But it is true!

Flying Snakes

Step one: flying snakes. In Southeast Asia, the flying snake flattens its body into a wide ribbon. It wiggles as it glides from tree to tree.

Parachute Feet

Step two: parachute feet. Some frogs have big, webbed feet that spread like little parachutes. These animals do not flap.

Slow the Fall

Step three: slow the fall. They use their shapes to slow their fall and steer. They live in forests where jumping to another tree is quicker than climbing down.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The snake flattens out. The frog spreads its feet. Neither flaps. They steer by shape.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A flying snake can glide the length of a tennis court or more. They live in forests. Frogs spread their webbed feet wide. Snakes flatten into a wide ribbon.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Flatten a piece of dough or paper into a ribbon. Try to glide it down. Does it fall slower than when it is rolled up? Wash your hands after touching dough. Keep asking why, and keep exploring!

Outro

Some snakes and frogs glide by flattening their bodies or spreading webbed feet to slow their fall and steer. These animals live in forests where gliding beats climbing down. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring! Every question is a new adventure, so keep wondering and keep exploring with me! So the next time you wonder about this, you will know just where to start looking.
