How Can an Insect Beat Its Wings Hundreds of Times Each Second?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can an insect beat its wings hundreds of times each second?

The Big Idea

A honeybee beats its wings hundreds of times each second. How can any muscle move so fast? The secret is in the muscles!

Special Muscles

Step one: special muscles. Many insects have special flight muscles that can contract again and again. They do not wait for a signal from the brain each time.

Fast Wings

Step two: fast wings. A honeybee beats its wings about two hundred thirty times a second, and a mosquito even more. Tiny midges can reach up to a thousand times a second.

The Buzz

Step three: the buzz. The fast flapping makes the buzz that you hear. Fast wings let small insects stay airborne.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A bee beats about 230 times. A mosquito beats even more. A midge beats up to 1,000. A hummingbird is much slower.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A hummingbird's wings beat about fifty times a second, much slower than an insect's. A bee beats about two hundred thirty times. Midges beat up to a thousand times. Fast flaps make the buzz.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Listen to a bee's buzz outdoors from a distance. Do not touch or swat it. Try to hum the same pitch. Remember, a faster flap makes a higher buzz. Then tell a friend what you found out.

Outro

Insects beat their wings hundreds of times a second using special muscles, and the fast flapping makes the buzz we hear. Science is amazing! Stay curious!
