How Do Feathers Turn a Bird's Wing Into a Flying Machine?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do feathers turn a bird's wing into a flying machine?

The Big Idea

A bird's wing is covered in feathers. They turn a wing into a flying machine. Let's see how!

Overlapping Feathers

Step one: overlapping feathers. A bird's wing has long, stiff flight feathers that overlap like shingles. That makes a broad, light surface.

Curved for Lift

Step two: curved for lift. The wing's top is curved, so as it moves through air it makes lift. On the downstroke, the feathers press together and push air down and back.

Twist Open

Step three: twist open. On the upstroke, the feathers twist open to let air through. Wings are both airplane and propeller in one.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Feathers overlap like shingles. The downstroke presses them tight. The upstroke opens them. Air slips through.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A bird's flight feathers can be replaced one at a time as they wear out. They overlap like shingles. The downstroke pushes air down and back. The upstroke lets air slip through.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at a feather with a magnifying glass. Gently brush it the wrong way. Then smooth it again. What do you notice? Then explain what you learned to a friend.

Outro

Feathers turn a bird's wing into both an airplane and a propeller in one. Every feather has a job, from lifting the bird to steering it. Science is amazing! What will you discover next? The more you look around, the more wonders you will find, so keep your eyes open! Ask a grown-up to help you try the mission, and see what you can find out.
