What Is Thrust, and How Do Planes Get It?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is thrust, and how do planes get it?

The Big Idea

Thrust is the force that moves a plane forward. Without it, a plane would just sit on the runway. How do planes get it?

Propellers

Step one: propellers. Propellers make thrust by pulling or pushing air backward. The plane moves forward in the opposite direction.

Jet Engines

Step two: jet engines. Jet engines make thrust by blasting hot gas out the back. It works like a balloon zooming away when you let it go.

Gliders

Step three: gliders. A glider has no engine, so it trades height for forward speed. Some small planes are powered by electric motors.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A propeller pushes air back. A jet blasts gas back. An electric motor spins a propeller. A glider trades height for speed.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some small planes are powered by electric motors. A balloon zooming away shows the idea of thrust. Propellers move air backward. Jets blast hot gas backward.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, blow up a balloon and let it go outdoors. Watch which way it goes. Compare that with the way the air comes out. Pick up the balloon afterward and throw it away. Keep asking why, and keep exploring!

Outro

Thrust pushes a plane forward when propellers or jet engines push air or gas backward. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring! There is always more to discover, and you are a great science explorer! So the next time you wonder about this, you will know just where to start looking.
