Why Do Solar Panels in Canada Face South?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do solar panels in Canada face south?

The Big Idea

Rooftop solar panels in Canada usually face south. That is not random. It all comes from where the Sun is in the sky.

Sun in the South

Step one: the Sun is in the south. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun is always in the southern part of the sky. So the south side of a roof gets the most light.

South-Facing Panels

Step two: south-facing panels. A south-facing panel gets the most sunshine over the day. It is also tilted so that it points toward the Sun.

The Best Angle

Step three: the best angle. The best tilt angle is roughly equal to the place's latitude. In the Southern Hemisphere, panels face north instead.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The Sun sits in the south. The panel faces it. A tilt points it at the Sun. A compass shows the way.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! In the summer, the Sun climbs higher, so a flatter panel works better. In Canada, panels face south. In the Southern Hemisphere, panels face north. The best tilt matches the place's latitude.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Use a compass to find south in your yard. Look for roofs or windows that face that way. Count how many you can spot. Which one would be best for panels? Write down what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.

Outro

In the Northern Hemisphere, solar panels face south because that is where the Sun travels across the sky. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions! The more you look around, the more wonders you will find, so keep your eyes open! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download!
