Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do rooftop solar panels share power with the grid?

The Big Idea

Solar panels on a roof can power a home. But that is not all they do. They can also share power with everyone else!

One-Way Power

Step one: one-way power. Solar panels make electricity that flows one way, called direct current. Houses use a different kind, called alternating current.

The Inverter

Step two: the inverter. A device called an inverter changes it into the alternating current that houses use. That way, everything at home can use it.

Share and Borrow

Step three: share and borrow. During the day, the home uses what it needs, and extra electricity flows out to the grid. At night, the home pulls power from the grid again, and a meter tracks both directions.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Panels make direct current. The inverter changes it. Extra power goes to the grid. A meter counts both ways.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some homes get credit on their bills for the power they send out. Inverters change the type of electric current. Meters track power going both directions. At night, homes borrow power from the grid again.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at a map of your neighborhood. Count how many roofs might have solar panels. Notice which direction they face. Why might that direction matter? Tell a grown-up what you discover!

Outro

Rooftop solar panels make power for a home and share the extra with the grid, and the home borrows it back at night. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring!
