What Is Biofuel?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is biofuel?

The Big Idea

Some fuel does not come from deep underground. It comes from plants that are growing right now. That is called biofuel!

Made From Life

Step one: made from life. Biofuel is fuel made from living things, such as corn, sugarcane, or used cooking oil. Ethanol, made from plants, can be mixed with gasoline.

Biodiesel

Step two: biodiesel. Biodiesel can be made from vegetable oils. Some buses and ships run on biodiesel.

Carbon From the Air

Step three: carbon from the air. Because the plants captured carbon dioxide while growing, some of the carbon released when burned was taken from the air. Making biofuel takes land, water, and energy, so people study the best ways to use it.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Corn makes ethanol. Sugarcane makes ethanol. Used cooking oil makes biodiesel. Some buses run on it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Remember, some buses and ships run on biodiesel. Ethanol made from plants can be mixed with gasoline. Making biofuel takes land, water, and energy. So people study the best ways to use it.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Visit a gas pump with a grown-up. Look for the sticker that tells how much ethanol the fuel may contain. Do not touch the nozzle. Write down what the sticker says. Keep asking why, and keep exploring!
