Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do ecosystems have so many more plants than meat-eaters?

The Big Idea

A meadow has thousands of grasshoppers. But it has only a few hawks. Energy is the reason!

Plants Catch the Sun

Step one: plants catch the Sun. A plant captures energy straight from the Sun. Plant-eaters must eat lots of plants to get enough energy.

Hunters Need More

Step two: hunters need more. Meat-eaters must eat plant-eaters. Since energy shrinks at each step, a small number of meat-eaters need a big area of plants.

A Big Meadow

Step three: a big meadow. That is why a meadow supports thousands of grasshoppers but only a few hawks. The wide base of plants holds everyone up.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Plants are everywhere. Grasshoppers eat them. Birds eat grasshoppers. Only a few hawks are fed.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A large wild cat may need hundreds of square miles of land to find enough food. Plants make up the wide base. Plant-eaters come next in number. Meat-eaters are the fewest of all.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! In a park, spend ten minutes looking around. Count plants, plant-eating insects, and birds that hunt. Write down your totals. Which group is the largest? Write down what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.

Outro

Ecosystems have many plants and few meat-eaters because energy shrinks at each step up the food chain. Next time you see a hawk, remember how many plants it takes to feed it. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions! Every question is a new adventure, so keep wondering and keep exploring with me! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books.
