Why Doesn’t Earth Keep Getting Hotter If the Sun Keeps Sending Energy?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why doesn’t Earth keep getting hotter if the Sun keeps sending energy?

The Big Idea

The Sun keeps sending energy to Earth every day. So why doesn't our planet keep getting hotter and hotter? The answer is balance!

Energy In

Step one: energy in. The Sun keeps sending energy to Earth. The land, water, and air take it in and warm up.

Energy Out

Step two: energy out. Earth sends energy back out to space as infrared rays, nearly as much as it takes in. When the amount in and the amount out balance, the temperature stays steady.

Blanket of Gases

Step three: a blanket of gases. Gases in the air, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide, slow the escape of heat. That keeps Earth warm enough for life, but changing those gases can change the balance.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Sunlight comes in. Infrared goes out. Air gases slow the escape. The balance keeps Earth steady.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Without any air, Earth would be much colder than it is. Energy in nearly equals energy out. Gases like water vapor and carbon dioxide slow the escape of heat. Changing those gases can change the balance.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Imagine filling a bathtub. The tap is the Sun. The drain is heat going out. Draw the water level steady, higher, and lower. Share your results with someone you love.

Outro

Earth stays steady because the energy it gets from the Sun nearly matches the energy it sends back out to space. Isn't balance clever? Science is amazing! Stay curious!
