How Hot Is the Sun’s Surface, and How Hot Is Its Core?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How hot is the Sun’s surface, and how hot is its core?

The Big Idea

The Sun is a ball of glowing gas. But different parts of it have wildly different temperatures. Let's take its temperature!

The Surface

Step one: the surface. The surface of the Sun is about ten thousand degrees Fahrenheit. That is hot enough to glow yellow-white.

The Core

Step two: the core. The core is much hotter, about twenty-seven million degrees Fahrenheit. It is about twenty-seven hundred times hotter than the surface.

The Corona

Step three: the corona. Strangely, the Sun's thin outer atmosphere, called the corona, is hotter than the surface. It is more than a million degrees, and scientists are still studying why.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The surface glows yellow-white. The core is far hotter. The corona is a surprise. Scientists are still working on it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Sun's core is about twenty-seven hundred times hotter than its surface. The corona is more than a million degrees. The surface is about ten thousand degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists are still studying why the corona is so hot.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a bar graph of four temperatures. Include a freezer, boiling water, the Sun's surface, and the Sun's core. Use a different scale for each. Which bar is the tallest? Write down what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.
