What Happens to Light When Something Swallows It?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What happens to light when something swallows it?

The Big Idea

When light hits something, it can bounce off or get swallowed. Swallowed light turns into heat. That is why a black shirt feels so warm in the sun!

Light Gets Absorbed

Step one: light is absorbed. When light hits a material that absorbs it, the energy goes into the material. The material's tiny particles jiggle faster, so it gets warmer.

Black Soaks It Up

Step two: black soaks it up. A black shirt absorbs most visible light and warms up. That makes it feel hot in the sun.

White Reflects

Step three: white reflects. A white shirt reflects most of the light and stays cooler. That is why light-colored clothing is more comfortable on hot sunny days.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Black swallows light. White bounces light away. Swallowed light becomes heat. The black shirt gets warmer.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some surfaces absorb light so well that they look completely black. A white shirt reflects most light. Light-colored clothing is more comfortable on hot days. Absorbed light turns into heat.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Put a black sock and a white sock in the sun for twenty minutes. Feel each one with your hand. Notice which feels warmer. Which sock got warmer? Keep asking why, and keep exploring!

Outro

Dark things warm up more in the sun because they absorb more light, and light things reflect it. Wear light colors on hot sunny days! Science is amazing! What will you discover next?
