What Is Infrared Light?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is infrared light?

The Big Idea

Beyond the red light you can see, there is another kind of light. Your eyes cannot see it. But your skin can feel it!

Beyond Red

Step one: beyond red. Infrared is a kind of light that is just beyond the red you can see. Your eyes cannot see it, but your skin can feel it as warmth.

Warm Things Glow

Step two: warm things glow. Warm things give off infrared, including people. Special cameras use it to see warm shapes in the dark.

Remotes and Discovery

Step three: remotes and discovery. TV remotes use infrared to send signals. A scientist discovered it in 1800 with a thermometer and a prism.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Red is the edge of what we see. Infrared is just beyond it. Heat cameras can see it. A remote sends signals with it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some snakes can sense infrared light from warm animals. People give off infrared light too. TV remotes send invisible signals with it. A scientist discovered it in the year eighteen hundred.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Point your phone camera at a TV remote, with a grown-up. Press a button on the remote. Look at the screen. Many phone cameras can show the infrared flash. Then tell a friend what you found out.

Outro
