How Does a Leaf Turn Sunshine Into Food?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a leaf turn sunshine into food?

The Big Idea

A green leaf is a tiny food factory. It runs on sunshine! Let's see how it works.

Catch the Light

Step one: catch the light. A green leaf takes in sunlight. A small part of that energy is used to make food.

Make Sugar

Step two: make sugar. The leaf uses that energy to make sugar from water and carbon dioxide. This is called photosynthesis, and the sugar stores the energy as chemical energy.

Most Light Goes Elsewhere

Step three: most light goes elsewhere. The rest of the light bounces off, passes through, or turns into heat. Even though only a small portion is stored, it feeds nearly all life on Earth.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The leaf catches sunlight. Water comes up from the roots. Carbon dioxide comes in from the air. Sugar is made and stored.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A leaf stores only a few percent of the sunlight that hits it. The sugar stores that energy as chemical energy. Nearly all life on Earth depends on this food. Leaves are tiny food factories powered by the Sun.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Place a leaf on a sunny windowsill. Place a second one in a dark closet. Look at both after a week. Which one looks healthier? Share your results with someone you love.
