Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Where does the energy come from when you jump?
The Big Idea
When you jump, you go up in the air all by yourself. Where does the energy for that come from? Your muscles and your lunch!
Muscles Push
Step one: muscles push. Your leg muscles use chemical energy from food to push against the ground. The push throws you upward and gives you moving energy.
Up and Down
Step two: up and down. As you rise, that moving energy turns into stored energy at the top of the jump. Then you fall, and the stored energy turns back into motion.
Bend Your Knees
Step three: bend your knees. Bending your knees first lets your muscles push longer and harder. That gives you more energy to jump higher.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Food gives you chemical energy. Your muscles push you up. At the top, energy is stored. On the way down, it becomes motion.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! On the Moon, the same jump would take you about six times higher. Bending your knees gives your muscles a longer push. The fuel for your jump is the food you ate. At the top of the jump, your energy is stored.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Stand next to a wall with a friend. Jump as high as you can with your knees bent. Ask your friend to mark the height. Now jump with stiff knees and mark again. Then explain what you learned to a friend.
Outro
Your jump runs on the chemical energy in food, which becomes motion, then stored energy, then motion again. Science is amazing! What will you discover next? Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
