What Does “Work” Mean in Science?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What does “work” mean in science?

The Big Idea

In everyday talk, work means a job or a task. But in science, work has a special meaning. Let's find it!

A Force Moves

Step one: a force moves something. In science, work happens when a force moves something. Pushing a box across the floor is work.

Lifting Counts

Step two: lifting counts. Lifting a bag up the stairs is work too. Holding a heavy bag still is not work in this sense, because it does not move, even though your muscles get tired.

Energy Moves Too

Step three: energy moves too. Doing work transfers energy to the thing being moved. The bigger the push and the longer the distance, the more work you do.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Pushing a box is work. Lifting a bag is work. Holding still is not work. A longer push means more work.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! In science, work happens only when a force moves something. Remember, doing work transfers energy to the thing being moved. Work and energy are both measured in joules. Holding a heavy bag still makes you tired but is not work in this sense.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Lift a book from the floor to a table. Now lift two books the same way. Which one took more work? Say why that is. Share your results with someone you love.
