Why Can Energy Never Be Made or Destroyed?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can energy never be made or destroyed?

The Big Idea

Scientists have tested this for more than a hundred and fifty years. Energy is never made from nothing, and it never disappears. It only changes form!

Energy Appears?

Step one: ask where it came from. When something starts to move, energy did not appear from nothing. It came from somewhere else, like food, fuel, or a battery.

Energy Disappears?

Step two: ask where it went. When a car stops, its moving energy turns into heat in the brakes and the road. The energy did not vanish. It just changed form.

Count the Total

Step three: count the total. If you add up all the energy before and after, the amount stays the same. Scientists call this the law of conservation of energy.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Food gives your body chemical energy. Your body turns it into motion. Rubbing and stopping make heat. The total amount stays the same.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists have never found an exception to this rule. It has been tested for more than a hundred and fifty years. When a car stops, its moving energy becomes heat in the brakes and the road. Energy only changes form or moves from one place to another.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Rub your hands together fast for ten seconds. Say what kind of energy you started with. Then say what kind you ended up with. Where did your motion energy go? Then tell a friend what you found out.
