Do Auroras Glow on Jupiter and Saturn Too?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Do auroras glow on Jupiter and Saturn too?

The Big Idea

You may have heard of the auroras on Earth, the colorful northern and southern lights. But they are not only on Earth! Let's visit other planets to see their glowing skies, and find out what makes them shine.

Brightest on Jupiter

Step one: brightest on Jupiter. Jupiter has the brightest auroras in the solar system. They glow in ultraviolet light that Earth telescopes in space can see.

Many Planets

Step two: many planets. Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune have auroras too. Mars has patchy auroras because it has bits of magnetism in its crust, left over from long ago.

Where They Appear

Step three: where they appear. Auroras show up where charged particles meet a planet's magnetic field and its upper air. Jupiter's auroras can be larger than the entire Earth.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Jupiter has glowing rings at its poles. Charged particles flow in. They meet the magnetic field. The air glows.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Jupiter's auroras can be bigger than our whole planet. They glow in ultraviolet light. Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune have them too. Mars has patchy auroras only.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw Jupiter with two glowing rings at its poles. Add small arrows showing where particles come from. Color the glow. Show it to a grown-up. Keep asking why, and keep exploring!
