Do Magnets Work on the Space Station?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Do magnets work on the space station?

The Big Idea

Do magnets still work when you float far above the ground in space? Yes, they do! There is even a giant magnet on the International Space Station.

No Air, No Problem

Step one: no air, no problem. Magnets do not need gravity or air, so they work just as well in space. A magnet does not care where it is.

A Giant Magnet Up There

Step two: a giant magnet up there. The International Space Station carries a giant magnet in an instrument called the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer. It weighs more than seven tons.

Bending Particles

Step three: bending particles. It bends the paths of fast particles from space so scientists can tell what they are made of. Astronauts must take care that magnets do not interfere with equipment.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The space station orbits Earth. It carries a giant magnet. Fast particles bend as they pass. Scientists study how they bend.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer weighs more than seven tons. Magnets work in space without air or gravity. It bends fast particles so scientists can study them. Astronauts must protect equipment from stray magnets.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Imagine you are an astronaut. Write two ways you could use a magnet inside a spacecraft. For example, holding tools in place. Share your ideas with a friend. Then explain what you learned to a friend.

Outro

Magnets work in space, and a giant magnet on the space station helps scientists study fast particles. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
