Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do tapes and hard drives store information with magnets?

The Big Idea

Old cassette tapes and computer hard drives look very different. But they share a secret: both store information using tiny magnetic patterns. One saves music, and the other saves almost everything on a computer. Let's see how they do it!

Cassette Tape

Step one: cassette tape. A cassette tape is a long strip of plastic coated with magnetic powder. A recording head magnetizes tiny regions in a pattern that matches the sound.

Hard Drive

Step two: hard drive. A hard drive stores data on spinning disks with magnetic regions. These regions stand for the 1s and 0s of computer code.

Tiny Heads

Step three: tiny heads. A tiny head hovers just above the disk and reads or writes the patterns. Newer devices use flash memory instead, which has no moving parts.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A tape holds magnetic powder. A disk holds magnetic regions. A tiny head reads and writes. The patterns store sound and data.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Newer gadgets use flash memory, with no moving parts. Hard disks spin very fast. Tapes store sound as magnetic patterns. Ones and zeros store the data.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a long strip of tape. Fill it with tiny arrows pointing left or right. Say how a pattern of arrows could store the word hi. Share your idea with a friend. Write down what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.

Outro

Tapes and hard drives store information as tiny magnetic patterns. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
