Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does an electromagnet switch on and off?
The Big Idea
Imagine a magnet you can switch on and off, like a light. It is called an electromagnet! Let's find out how one works, and how it is different from a regular magnet.
A Coil Around Iron
Step one: a coil around iron. An electromagnet is a coil of wire wrapped around an iron core. The iron core helps the magnet become stronger.
Switch On
Step two: switch on. When electricity flows through the wire, the coil makes a magnetic field. The iron gets magnetized, so it becomes a strong magnet.
Switch Off
Step three: switch off. When the electricity is turned off, the field disappears and the magnet lets go. Adding more turns of wire or more current makes it stronger.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A wire is wrapped in a coil. Iron sits in the middle. Electricity flows through the wire. The iron becomes a strong magnet.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! An electromagnet is often strong enough to lift a car when it is built large enough. More turns of wire make it stronger. More current makes it stronger too. And you can switch it on and off.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a nail wrapped with wire connected to a battery. Label on and off. Draw what happens to a paper clip in each case. Use a drawing only, not a real circuit. Write down what you notice, and share it with a grown-up.
Outro
An electromagnet is a coil of wire around iron that becomes a magnet when electricity flows. Science is amazing! Stay curious! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
