Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How did sailors steer before GPS?

The Big Idea

Long ago, sailors crossed whole oceans without GPS. They did it by combining many simple tools, and a lot of careful thinking. There were no satellites, no screens, and no maps on a phone. Let's climb aboard and find out how!

Direction and Speed

Step one: direction and speed. A compass told sailors their direction. A line with knots trailing behind the ship measured how fast it was going.

Time and Stars

Step two: time and stars. A sandglass or clock measured time. At night, the stars helped sailors find their latitude, while charts showed coasts and shallow places.

Putting It Together

Step three: putting it together. By combining all this information, sailors could estimate their position across thousands of miles of ocean. It took skill and lots of practice, and a crew that worked together every single day.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The compass shows direction. The knotted line shows speed. The sandglass shows time. Stars and charts show where they are.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The word knot for ship speed comes from the knots in that speed-measuring line. Compasses gave the direction. Stars helped sailors find their latitude at night. Today, GPS has replaced many of these old tools.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a chart of five old navigation tools. Next to each, write one modern replacement. For example, GPS replaces a star chart. Share your chart with a friend. Then tell a friend what you found out.

Outro

Before GPS, sailors steered by combining a compass, speed, time, stars, and charts. Science is amazing! Stay curious! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
