Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How did people first discover the compass?

The Big Idea

The compass is one of the greatest tools ever invented. But nobody knows the exact day it was discovered. Here is the story of how people probably found it.

Magic Rocks

Step one: magic rocks. People noticed that pieces of lodestone, a naturally magnetic rock, could attract iron. It seemed like magic to them.

A Pointing Needle

Step two: a pointing needle. Later, they found that a lodestone, or a needle rubbed with one, would turn to point north and south if it could swing freely. Early compasses often used a needle floating on a leaf or a straw in a bowl of water.

Sailors Spread the Idea

Step three: sailors spread the idea. Around 900 years ago, sailors in China began using magnetized needles on ships. The idea soon spread to other parts of the world.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First came lodestone. Then came a rubbed needle. Floating it in water helped it turn. Sailors used the idea at sea.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Early compasses often used a needle floating on a leaf or a straw. Sailors in China began using them on ships. The idea spread across the world. A rubbed needle can become a magnet.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Rub a steel paper clip on a magnet ten times in one direction. Float it on a leaf in a bowl of water. Watch which way it turns. Ask a grown-up to help set it up. Keep asking why, and keep exploring!

Outro

People found the compass by noticing that lodestone and rubbed needles point north when they swing freely. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
