Is Earth’s Magnet Stronger than a Fridge Magnet?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Is Earth’s magnet stronger than a fridge magnet?

The Big Idea

Which is stronger, the magnet in your hand or the magnet under your feet? The answer is a surprise. Earth's field is much weaker than a fridge magnet's, but it is also much, much bigger!

Earth Is Gentle

Step one: Earth is gentle. On the ground, Earth's field is about 100 times weaker than the field at the surface of a typical fridge magnet. It is a very gentle pull.

But It Is Huge

Step two: but it is huge. Even though it is weak, Earth's field reaches around the whole planet. It is about 25 to 65 millionths of a tesla.

A Light Needle

Step three: a light needle. A compass needle can follow Earth's field because the needle is very light and turns easily. A heavy magnet would need a much stronger push.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A fridge magnet is strong up close. Earth's field is much weaker. But it reaches around the whole planet. A light needle can follow it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Earth's field is about 25 to 65 millionths of a tesla. A fridge magnet is about 100 times stronger at its surface. A light needle can still follow the field. And Earth's field is huge in size.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hold a compass far away from any magnet. See it point north. Now bring a fridge magnet near. See how quickly it changes the needle. Tell a grown-up what you discover!
